Any mountain climber will tell you that the first step on the path to success is the proper footwear. Running shoes are good. Steel toed boots are better. But heels are definitely a no no. Unless you’re Ben Conway, that is!
19-year-old Ben Conway made a successful 900 meter climb up Ben Nevis Mountain in Scotland while wearing a boldly sexy pair of 5-inch stiletto heels.
As you can imagine, the trip was treacherous. The high heeled climber navigated through fast streams, large rocks, and even torrential rain. But thanks to his guide’s patience and knowledge, he made it most of the way up. Conway actually admits that the guide “didn’t realize that I was going to be wearing heels, but they were really good.”
The big question on your mind now is probably, “Wh would someone wear stripper heels to climb a mountain? Is it attention seeking or some weird kink?” Thankfully, no. Conway’s intentions were both wholesome and altruistic. Conway made the trek to secure donations for the LGBT charity Stonewall and Sal’s Shoes, which makes shoes for underprivileged children.
It seems like the stunt was a success as media outlets and followers are spreading the word and donating money. According to Ben, a passerby on the mountain even gave them $20.
Conway didn’t actually make it to the mountain’s summit. The weather took a turn when he was around 2/3rds of the way up. Conway was disappointed. He said “I would say the most challenging point was … having to stop so close and turn around.”
Ben admits that he could have worn boots the rest of the way and put the heels on at the top, or even wore some less daring kitten heels, to begin with. But Conway confesses” I’m quite stubborn and it was all or nothing… If you’re going to go and do it, do it properly and wear the stilettos.
