Have you ever thought about how the gentle giants of the ocean catch some zees? Well, after seeing these incredible shots of sperm whales sleeping, you’ll never have to wonder again!
Underwater photographer Franco Banfi was following a pod of sperm whales in the Caribbean sea when he happened upon them sleeping and took these breathtaking photos.
This behavior was first documented not long ago — only back in 2008. Of course, people knew sperm whale slept, but scientists had never seen or reported it, so it was somewhat of an enigma.
Now we know that sperm whales spend roughly 7 percent of their lives asleep. However, they only sleep for short periods of roughly 5 to 25 minutes at a time.
Let’s take a look at these stunning shots.
