Christie Brinkley is still turning heads decades after her debut in Sports Illustrated. The 63-year-old supermodel will be returning to her role as Sports Illustrated model 37 years after her debut as the magazine’s covergirl. Christie will be making her ninth appearance in the magazine in the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. She will be joined by her daughters, Alexa Ray Joel and Sailor Lee Brinkley Cook.
The iconic supermodel began her modeling career in 1973 after being discovered by a photographer in a Parisian post office. The photographer, Errol Sawyer, introduced her to John Casablancas and he signed her to Elite Model Management in Paris. Brinkley’s career skyrocketed after the meeting, and she began to appear on numerous magazine covers including Glamour, Vogue, Esquire, and Cosmopolitan. She also landed a contract with Covergirl, and she has been with the company for 25 years. Her contract is the only one of its kind in the modeling industry.
Brinkley made her first appearance in the Sports Illustrated Magazine in 1979. The issue did so well that the Magazine asked her to shoot for the 1980 and 1981 editions. The Sports Illustrated gig solidified Brinkley’s place as an American Supermodel and an icon in the 1980s. Brinkley also appeared in the SI Swimsuit Calendar as well as television specials for the brand.
At 63, Brinkley is the oldest model to appear on the cover of the Swimsuit edition, but her body rivals those of her young daughters. The trio appears on the cover and has a spread inside the magazine. Her daughter Sailor is pursuing her own career in modeling, and this will be her first appearance in the magazine. Her oldest daughter Alexa, offspring of Brinkley and legendary artist Billy Joel, will also be making her first SI appearance in this issue.
In the past, Brinkley has shared some tips on how she keeps in shape. The model avoids the sun when she is not working, and she is a vegetarian that only consumes natural foods.
