It’s official. Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting at the MGM Grand Las Vegas on August 26, 2017.
Both fighters took to their social media pages Wednesday evening to announce the fight. McGregor posted a picture of him in a collage with Floyd’s father. The tongue-in-cheek photo is supposed to poke fun at the “pretty boy” fighter.
There has been lots of back and forth between both camps and officials of the MMA and Boxing Association.
Uncertainty surrounded the fight as both men are part of two different leagues with different requirements.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is more of a battle sport that involves martial arts techniques. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was formed in 1993 as a promotional company that marketed MMA fights. Since then, it has expanded by creating regulations for the sport and hosting events all over the world.
Conor McGregor joined the UFC in 2008 and won two titles in 2012. He took home the Cage Warriors Featherweight Championship and lightweight championship. Two years later, he won the Featherweight championship against Jose Aldo, and he made UFC history with the fastest knockout on record.
He is currently the only MMA fighter on the Forbes highest-paid athletes list. His record is 21-3.
Mayweather’s camp, Mayweather Promotions, received word from the Nevada State Athletic Commission that they have permission for the fight to be held in Vegas.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the son of former boxer Floyd Mayweather Sr. Mayweather Jr. began his career by winning the Golden Gloves championships from 1993 to 1994 and again in 1996. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the Featherweight division against Lorenzo Aragon.
Mayweather Jr. joined the profession world of boxing later that year in October. Two years later he won his first title, The WBC Super Featherweight, against Genaro Hernandez.
Mayweather Jr. went on to win 15 professional titles, and he retired in 2015 undefeated with a 49-0 record.
Floyd will be stepping out of retirement for this fight and McGregor has been undergoing boxing training and licensing. The fight is projected to bring in $100 million for Mayweather and $75 million for McGregor.
