Cena, the 10 year old black lab, received a hero’s goodbye on Wednesday before being euthanized on a World War II tank airship by a veterinarian who waited on board. His owner, Lance Cpl. Jeff Young served with him in Afghanistan and adopted him in 2014. They were together in 2009 and 2010 and Cena was a bomb sniffer for the Marines.

DeYoung told ABC News, “When I was 19 overseas learning how to be responsible, I had Cena. And now I’m 27 and I’m having to say goodbye to one of the biggest pieces of my life.”

The ceremony to honor Cena and his service was joined by the US Marine Corps League, Michigan State Police, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office, Muskegon City Police, Muskegon Fire Department and other officers from surrounding departments including one canine officer. DeYoung also took his dog on one final ride in his Jeep decorated with “Cancer Response Team.”
