But contrary to popular belief, the church of Satan doesn’t actually worship the devil, at least not in the way you’d think. Lucien Greaves, a spokesperson for the temple, says it’s a nontheistic religious organization” that prioritizes freedom and individuality. Despite the non-theism, Greaves says that their beliefs are “no less deeply held” than any other religion. In truth, most of the satanic imagery is just for flavor, and to drum up attention.
The monument itself shows this, as it’s really solemn and mature. The Temple describes it as “black steel cube with embossed inverted pentagrams with inlaid gold on four sides. An inverted helmet rests on the top of the cube. A plaque on one side of the cube reads: ‘In honor of Belle Plaine veterans who fought to defend the United States and its Constitution’.”
This comes just a year after the Satanic Temple was violently driven away by protesters for attempting to erecting an 8-foot-tall bronze monument in Detroit.
