North Carolina pastor Steven Furtick has signed a $110 million contract to join Joel Osteen’s Ministry at Lakewood Church in Houston, TX. Furtick’s contract will be for six years.
The entire event was a bit of a spectacle with the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) Channel hosting a live TV special titled “The Decision” which is reminiscent of the Lebron decision special held a few years ago.
TBN is the most-watched Christian network on TV. It has a slew of different faith-based programming, and Joel Osteen is one of the network’s stars.
Olsteen is a televangelist that inherited Lakewood Church from his father. He began preaching in 1999 and grew the ministry into a Christian Empire. Lakewood Church is the largest non-denominational Church in the United States.
Olsteen’s weekly sermons attract 45,000 parishioners. The Church has a daycare, gym, and many other accommodations for worshippers.
Furtick is a pastor at Elevation Church in North Carolina. He is also a New York Times bestselling author, with five books under his belt.
Furtick graduated from North Greenville University with a B.A. in Communications before attending Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to receive his masters in divinity.
After a short stint as a church musical director, he started Elevation Church in 2006. His Church has donated over $100 million to local organizations. Furtick travels the world preaching and holding conferences such as the Hillsong Conference.
He announced the decision to leave his church at the Church’s press conference center. His current contract at Elevation ended in June, and lots of speculation surrounded his next move.
Many people wondered if he would stay at Elevation under a “modest” salary or move onto a bigger Church. The Church currently has 11 campuses all around the city
Olsteen hopes to form a superstar preaching team with him as the captain and Furtick by his side. Furtick’s $110 million contract is the largest preaching contract ever.
