For 15 years, Terrie Bowman had been extremely close with her beloved beagle, Charlie, she had adopted from a puppy mill where he had become ill. Terrie never lost hope and managed to heal her beloved pet. The two of them were so inseparable that even when Charlie passed, he did so in Terrie’s arms.
As you can imagine, she was devastated.
Her heart was so broken that even after her dog passed, Terrie kept his ashes in her bedroom. Her overall behavior affected the whole family –even the family’s younger dog, Gracie Jo, felt depressed.
Kristen Bowman, Terrie’s daughter, had to take action. She decided in May that she wanted her mom to let go, she had to get her a new pet and she visited the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) where she found an adorable pooch, Pepper. Pepper’s story was similar to Terrie’s.
What’s magical is that Pepper had a backstory story similar to Terrie’s.
Being an elderly woman who became unable to look after her, Pepper’s previous owner had to give her up to the shelter. The cute pooch was sad that she was no longer part of a family and this was the reason why Kristen decided that Pepper was the perfect candidate.
She had found the perfect gift for Mother’s Day!
When Terrie learned Pepper’s story, she knew what she had to do. After all, she, among many people, knew how hard losing a best friend could be and just the thought of an elderly woman saying goodbye to her pet just broke her heart. She contacted BARCS asking for the previous owner’s address and she immediately wrote a letter to her.
“Hello. You don’t know me but I have a story to tell you that may interest you,” the touching message begins:
After Terrie sent the letter, Pepper’s previous owner felt the need to respond and the two women have already scheduled a FaceTime call.
“I know this won’t take away her pain of losing Charlie, but it is helping her to heal and that means the world to me,” Kristen said of her mother. “In my heart, I truly felt it was meant to be.”
This is a one-of-a-kind story which can only inspire us. If Terrie and Pepper were meant to find each other, we should never lose hope. There is always someone out there for you. Someone who needs the same things you might need and understands your fears, your hopes, you.
There is a Terrie, a Pepper, an elderly woman, a person out there for every single one of us!
