Super Rare Green Puppy Born to Golden Retriever

He’ll only be green for a bit, however.

A very rare sight indeed…a golden retriever gave birth to a green puppy!

According to a report from The Sun, a golden retriever named Rio from the Scottish Highlands had a litter of puppies – and one of the nine pups was born with green fur!

They named the little guy “Forest.” Perfect.

The dogs’ owner, Louise Sutherland, explained, “The first pup was stuck, so myself and my daughter Claire managed to free him and pull him out safely.”

She added, “It was all hands on deck but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn’t believe it.”

This occurrence is pretty rare, with a TIME magazine article from 2014 explaining that veterinarians believed that a puppy’s exposure to the green bile biliverdin in the placenta could be the cause of staining the fur.

According to Sutherland, “the color has faded quite a bit already and will be gone soon, I’m told.” Of the litter, she explained, “Rio had a total of seven boys and one girl and they are all great and growing like mushrooms.”

For now, however, Forest certainly is worthy of his name. It’s not easy being green, after all.
