Marvel has just released the trailer for Black Panther, and it’s taking the internet by storm. The film is directed by Ryan Coogler, a relatively new director that has directed the movies Fruitvale Station and Creed.
In both Coogler movies, the lead actor was Michael B. Jordan, who is a part of the Black Panther cast. He plays N’Jadaka aka Erik Killmonger, a nemesis of the Panther.
The lead character in the movie is Chadwick Boseman. Boseman is most well-known for his role as Jackie Robinson in the biopic 42 and as James Brown in Get on Up. He will be playing T’Challa, the king of Wakanda and the Black Panther.
In the comics, Wakanda is described as a wealthy technologically superior country that has never been colonized by Europeans. However, many people are trying to infiltrate the country to get their hands on vibranium. Vibranium is a powerful metal that is used to make the Black Panther’s suit and Captain America’s shield.
Other notable characters: Ulysses Klaw, Man-Ape, Ayo, Nakia and Queen Mother Ramonda.
Ulysses Klaw is played by Andy Serkis. He is reprising his role from Avengers: Age of Ultron as a villain of the Panther. Man-Ape is another Panther villain from Wakanda. He is the leader of a rival tribe. Ayo and Nakia are members of the Dora Milaje. This is the all-female royal guard. These women train to be warriors and a mate for T’Challa. Florence Kasumba plays Ayo and Lupita Nyong’o plays Nakia.
Queen Mother Ramonda is T’Challa’s mother and the wife of King T’Chaka. King T’Chaka was killed in Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa came to power shortly afterward. Angela Bassett stars as the Queen Mother.
There is a lot of crossover that happens in the Marvel Universe. All of the heroes are interconnected, and origin stories often overlap.
Black Panther was written by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole. It will be in theaters February 2018.
