An anonymous soul known only by the Reddit handle of XXViiParadise found this decaying creature of the deep covered in sand along a California beach. Due to its decomposing state, exact identification is difficult and marine biologists can only offer suggestions. Experts believe the dead creature might have been a Sea Hare, Limpet or Sidegill in life, but there are issues with each possibility.

According to John Hyde, a program leader of fisheries genetics at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California, “Because of the animal’s decomposition, it is difficult to be certain what this animal may have been. However, it does resemble a black Sea Hare (Aplysia vaccaria) that are fairly common in this area.”

Whatever this bizarre sea creature was in life, it weighed about 7 pounds and measured about 5 inches across. According to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, Sea Hares, which are a group of sea slug species, can weigh as much as 30 pounds and grow as long as 29 inches, but not all marine biologists believe this creature was a Sea Hare.
